How to Move with Your Dog (Safely and Stress-Free!)
It’s no secret that there’s plenty of planning involved in a move, no matter how near or far you’re going. Here are the tips you need to get yourself – and your dog – ready for your new adventure.
1. Reach out to your vet.
If you’ll be moving out of the area, get in touch with your vet so that they can provide you with your pet’s medical records and any necessary prescription medications. Oftentimes, it’s a good idea to fit in one last check-up, especially if your dog will be due for a visit in the near future. That way, you can make sure that their health needs are taken care of ahead of time. You can also ask your vet if they have any recommendations for a provider located in your new neighborhood.
2. Stick to their routine as much as possible.
As moving day approaches, you’ll probably be busy packing up and organizing last-minute details. But it can be really helpful to maintain a sense of structure for your dog, especially in terms of reducing their stress. Keep to their usual walking and mealtimes, and don’t forget to give them lots of cuddles and attention. Consistency will help your dog feel safe, even as their environment is changing.
3. Explore your new neighborhood with your dog before moving day.

Just like you want to feel settled as soon as possible, so does your dog. Have a plan in place to create a comfortable, safe spot for your pet to be in the new home, as soon as possible. Use familiar items, such as their bed, comforting toys, and any other favorite things to make them feel more at home. Instead of packing their necessities with all the other household items, consider putting together a special “kit” that contains their bed and toys, as well as enough dog food and treats for several days. That way, they can feel at ease right away, and you’ll have supplies on hand to get you through the first day or two of unpacking.
