Whether you’re planning a cross-country move or just relocating within your hometown, moving can be stressful. And when you have furry family members, there are even more challenges to think about.

Moving is often a major, stress-inducing change for humans, so imagine how much anxiety it can create for your canine companion! From the unexpected activity to strangers coming in and out of their homes, pets can easily become overwhelmed during the moving process. Even worse, many dogs end up getting lost or injured in the chaos of packing, moving, and setting up a new home – which is the worst nightmare of any pet parent.

Here at Canine Country Club & Feline Inn, we know a thing or two about keeping your four-legged friends happy. Plus, more than a few team members at our Phoenix doggie daycare and hotel have had their own experiences moving with dogs. So, we’ve put together our top tips for moving to a new home with a dog, so you can make the move easier, calmer, and less hectic for everyone involved.

How to Move with Your Dog (Safely and Stress-Free!)

It’s no secret that there’s plenty of planning involved in a move, no matter how near or far you’re going. Here are the tips you need to get yourself – and your dog – ready for your new adventure.

1. Reach out to your vet.

If you’ll be moving out of the area, get in touch with your vet so that they can provide you with your pet’s medical records and any necessary prescription medications. Oftentimes, it’s a good idea to fit in one last check-up, especially if your dog will be due for a visit in the near future. That way, you can make sure that their health needs are taken care of ahead of time. You can also ask your vet if they have any recommendations for a provider located in your new neighborhood.

2. Stick to their routine as much as possible.

As moving day approaches, you’ll probably be busy packing up and organizing last-minute details. But it can be really helpful to maintain a sense of structure for your dog, especially in terms of reducing their stress. Keep to their usual walking and mealtimes, and don’t forget to give them lots of cuddles and attention. Consistency will help your dog feel safe, even as their environment is changing.

3. Explore your new neighborhood with your dog before moving day.

If you’re going to be moving to a new home that’s not too far, you and your dog can get to know the area ahead of time. For example, if you’re a Phoenix-area resident that’s relocating from the Arcadia area to Downtown, it’s usually pretty easy to make regular visits. Try taking your dog on walks around your new neighborhood, so they can start to experience all of the new sights, smells, and sounds. They’ll be able to get more comfortable and acclimated, which will make the transition much easier.

4. Prioritize setting up their “safe space” in your new home.

Just like you want to feel settled as soon as possible, so does your dog. Have a plan in place to create a comfortable, safe spot for your pet to be in the new home, as soon as possible. Use familiar items, such as their bed, comforting toys, and any other favorite things to make them feel more at home. Instead of packing their necessities with all the other household items, consider putting together a special “kit” that contains their bed and toys, as well as enough dog food and treats for several days. That way, they can feel at ease right away, and you’ll have supplies on hand to get you through the first day or two of unpacking.

5. Book them a stay at a doggie daycare and/or overnight pet hotel.

When you think about everything that’s involved in the moving process, it often makes the most sense to connect with a doggie daycare for pet relocation services. Not only can you have the peace of mind of knowing that your dog is somewhere safe (no more worries about them escaping through an open gate or being accidentally injured), but you’ll also be confident that they’re getting the physical and mental exercise they need to be happy and healthy. It’s one of the best ways to decrease stress for both you and your dog.
