It’s National Pet Week — 8 Ways to Celebrate This Day!

CanineCountryClub8WaysCelebrateTheDay

Every May, animal lovers unite to celebrate one of the happiest weeks of the year: National Pet Week®! Celebrating in Phoenix, Arizona, it means sunny days for your pet and more great #DogsofInstragram posts, right?

Originally created by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the celebratory week is intended to honor the bond between pet owners and their best pet friends. Since the first National Pet Week in 1981, the event’s creators have worked to make it an occasion for pet owners to learn as much as possible about pets’ unique needs and wants.

When is National Pet Week 2021?

This year, the AVMA’s National Pet Week will be taking place from May 2nd through May 8th. Each day of the week centers on a special topic, highlighting some of the most important aspects of pet ownership:

    • Sunday: Choose well: Commit for life
    • Monday: Socialize now: New doesn’t have to be scary
    • Tuesday: Nutrition and exercise matter
    • Wednesday: Love your pet? See your vet!
    • Thursday: Travel with care
    • Friday: Emergencies happen: Be prepared
    • Saturday: Plan for their care: Give them a lifetime of love

From experienced pet parents to those who have just adopted their first pet friend, every day of National Pet Week offers an excellent opportunity to learn more about being the best possible pet owner. And beyond that, it’s the perfect time of year to show your pet just how special they are – whether they have fur, feathers, or fins.

8 Ways to Celebrate National Pet Week

Here at Canine Country Club & Feline Inn, we’re proud to do our part to support National Pet Week and help you and your pets have fun with it. We’ve rounded up a list of eight ideas to inspire you to celebrate National Pet Week in a way that will certainly make tails wag.

1. Pamper your pet with some extra grooming.

As humans, most of us love treating ourselves to a little TLC in the form of a fresh haircut, a manicure, or something similar. Why not do the same for your pets? For example, give your dog a nice bath with a new shampoo, a thorough brushing, and of course, some treats afterward. Cats are usually pretty low-maintenance when it comes to grooming, but even they might enjoy a brushing session. However you choose to groom your pet, it can be a wonderful bonding experience.

2. Add a special playtime session to your daily calendar.

Odds are, you spend plenty of spare minutes playing with your pet. Whether you’re tossing a ball around after dinner, engaging in a tough tug-of-war session, or playing cat-and-mouse with a favorite cat toy, your furry family members are always up for a game. For National Pet Week, make plans to set aside some extra time for fun at home, at the dog park, or in the backyard.

3. Introduce your pet to new animal friends at your favorite pet daycare.

Socialization is a huge part of a pet’s life; in fact, it’s even one of the key themes of this year’s National Pet Week! But sometimes, it can be hard to figure out how to help your pet make friends and interact with other animals on a regular basis. At Canine Country Club and Feline Inn, our pet daycare is the ideal opportunity to set up some socialization in a safe, well-supervised environment.

4. Give your pet the gift of a new toy.

If you’re anything like us, you’re a pet parent that loves spoiling your furry (or feathered or finned) friend with a new toy. Stop by your local pet supply store and pick out something special with your pet in mind. Whether it’s a new chew toy, a yarn ball, or even a new aquarium accessory, their day will be made.

5. Surprise your pet with a tasty treat you know they’ll love.

There’s no question that pets love treats – who doesn’t? Many pet stores carry extra-special treats that are perfect for a special occasion, like celebrating National Pet Week. You can even find recipes for DIY dog treats or cat treats if you feel like spending some time in the kitchen.

6. Snap some photos of your pet – and don’t forget to get yourself in the shot too!

Pet portraits are a fun way to capture your pet’s personality and remember your special bond forever. Take some photographs of them in their element – running around outside, taking a nap in the afternoon sun, or swimming around their tank – and make sure to snag a few selfies with them as well. Pick your favorite, then put it in a fun frame as a memento of your National Pet Week 2021 celebrations.

7. Double up on the snuggles.

Our pets love and care for us so many ways, and perhaps one of the best is supplying us with plenty of cuddles. Dogs, cats, and even small animals like birds, bunnies, and hamsters often enjoy nothing more than snuggling up with their pet parent. A soft blanket and a comfy place to rest, paired with some extra belly rubs, are a simple but sweet way to make them feel special.

8. Make sure your pet is up-to-date on preventive care and health necessities.

Although most of our ideas for ways to celebrate National Pet Week focus on having fun, this is the one that is perhaps the most important. Pets should have a regular wellness exam scheduled with your veterinarian, and keeping them up to date on vaccinations and other pet care basics is key. You want to spend as much time as possible together, and for them to feel their best, and prioritizing proper care makes all the difference for their long-term health.
